A security expert Dr. Kwesi Ennin says the security agencies can only contain the volatile situation in the Northern Region if they arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of the violence there.
He said using police and military muscle to force those inciting violence to go underground does not solve the problem.
He was commenting on the shooting incident at Gushiegu in the Northern Region involving the supporters of the NDC and the NPP.
Dr. Ennin told Joy News’ Akwasi Sarpong that failure to arrest and prosecute those who engage in armed violence in the region amounts to ineptitude on the part of the police.
That ineptitude for him, serves as an incentive for people to continue to recklessly endanger the lives of others.
Dr. Ennin warned that if the Tamale crisis is not effectively dealt with it could spread to other parts of the country.
He said the impunity with which people use arms in the region must not be tolerated.
The judiciary according to him must punish people severely when they appear before the courts charged with violent crimes.
“If we don’t get these people punished, in December we will be singing a different tune” he cautioned.
