Government has been at the negotiation table this year with several unions in the education sector discussing how wages and arrears will be paid.
Due to these unresolved issues, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association embarked on an industrial strike and pledged to withhold their services unless their demands are met.
Following several consultations, the National Executive Councils of the Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association suspended their industrial strike action because of the National Labour Commission’s ruling and interventions by stakeholders to ensure a speedy resolution of all issues.
Earlier today, UTAG agreed to suspend its strike following an emergency meeting with the National Labour Commission (NLC) and Employment and Labour Relations Ministry. Also, public sector workers hit the streets of Accra to protest against inadequate salary increment of about 4 to 7 per cent.
Tonight on Joy News' PM Express, host, Aisha Ibrahim engaged President of UTAG, Prof. Charles Ofosu Marfo, Deputy Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Bright Wireko-Brobbey, Convenor of the Public Sector Union, Norbert Gborgbortsi and Labour Expert, Austin Gamey to discuss labour unrest and the crisis at the employment front.
