Two police officers have been sentenced to jail for 60 years by an Accra Circuit Court for being guilty of two counts of robbery. The accused, Reuben Addison and Edward Opoku, were both police officers stationed at Achimota terminal and armored car squadron respectively. They were charged on two counts: conspiracy to commit crime and robbery contrary to section 149 of the criminal offences act 1960. They both pleaded not guilty in a court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri. The prosecutor and Assistant State Attorney, Winifred Sarpong, told the court that on February 7, 2011, the complainant, a business man residing at Kosoa, took a sum of GHc37, 370 from his brother at Accra central. The complainant hired a motor bike and headed to Abeka to conduct his business. En route, the complainant had a phone call and the driver stopped to allow him to answer the call.According to the prosecutor, moments later, a certain man rushed on the complainant with a pistol and asked him to surrender the bag. Before the complainant could answer, the first accused (in police uniform) accompanied by second accused arrived in an unregistered private car and dragged the complainant together with the motor rider into a car and sped off towards Achimota Police station. The prosecutor told the court that on the way, the accused persons stopped and pushed the motor rider down and took a different course towards Awoshie. On reaching a spot at Oblogo, the engine of the car stopped and the complainant began shouting for help. Some people came around and arrested the first and second accused persons and sent them to Weija Police Station together with the complainant. In their caution statements, they admitted the offence. GHc29, 390 was retrieved from the accused persons. The court found them guilty and sentenced them to 60 years imprisonment with had labour.
