The Wa West MP, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has decried the current rating of the country in relation to Press Freedom.
Journalists Without Borders in its 2022 Press Freedom Index placed Ghana in the 60th position out of 180 countries globally and 10th in Africa.
Commenting on the report in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, Mr Toobu stated that dropping from 30 to 60 dents the image of the country.
According to him, dropping in such a manner should not be anything that Ghanaians should be proud of “whether you are in opposition or you are in government.“
This, he explained is because “it affects our democratic credentials" as a country and therefore urged all Ghanaians to be concerned.
“And for me, I am really concerned about this matter,” he emphasised.
According to him, when Parliament reconvenes, he would take up the subject with his colleagues and see what they can do to improve press freedom so that the next report will be well received.
“I would do the best that I can with my colleagues for us to play our oversight role effectively and ensure that there is an express legislation to ensure that all these state agencies must be apolitical to promote democracy," he said.
"We should begin to look at how do we ensure state institutions that are supposed to be independent are apolitical and doing what they are supposed to be doing right,” he added.
In the meantime, a media campaigner for Press Freedom, Manasseh Azure Awuni has urged President Akufo-Addo to sit up and speak up against threats against media freedom.
He stated that President Akufo-Addo should be “blamed squarely for what is happening under his watch.”
