The Progressive People's Party (PPP) has cast doubts on President Mahama’s commitment to fulfill promises he made in his recent state of the Nation Address.
Addressing a press conference in Accra, Wednesday, the PPP Director of operations, Nana Ofori Owusu noted that the president failed to talk about the true reflection of the state of the economy.
"The president's [statement], however, was of things he want to do in 2014. but judging from the president's style of promises we have seen in the past two years, we cannot be sure that any of the things he said will be done", the PPP Director of operations stressed.
Joy News' Michaela Anderson reported that the PPP also described the President's address as lacking measures put in place to address the issues of health care, education, employment among others but rather downplayed the the hardships experienced in the country.
"The PPP is shocked and disappointed at the content of what was delivered as the state of the nation address by the president on Tuesday, 25 Feb, 2014.
"Specifically, what the president should have done is to tell us what he has put in place to ensure the rights of citizens to education, employment, good health care and what he has done to ensure a healthy economy", Nana Ofori Owusu noted.
Additionally, the PPP says, there can only be good governance if government creates the enabling environment for the private sector to grow, broaden the tax net, and also reduce importations into the country.
The Party further called for the separation the office of the Attorney General from the Ministry of Justice so that "the office is removed from the negative influence of partisan politics".
The PPP also wants government to separate the legislature from the executive so that "effective checks and balances will operate without fear or favour" and also make the metropolitan, municipal, district chief executive positions an elected positions to ensure accountability at the local level.
