The Gomoa District Council of Labour has commended the government for appointing a ministerial committee to probe the causes of delays in the payment of salaries of Public Sector workers. Speaking to the GNA at Apam, Mr Stephen Agyei-Yeboah, Chairman of the DCL, said the “High Powered” committee indicated the government's determination to remove obstacles affecting productivity. He noted that workers often deserted post to go for loans to "survive" when their salaries delayed. Mr Agyei-Yeboah urged the government to expand the terms of reference of the Committee to include delays in the payment of retirement benefits. He stated that the requirements for pensioners to get their retirement benefits were “too difficult,” and added that “This makes some retired workers die without getting their entitlements.” Mr Agyei-Yeboah mentioned demands like one's first appointment letter and letters of transfers and promotions, as some of the requirements, which were difficult to meet. “Retirement benefits are entitlements due the worker for serving the nation for years, which must be accessed without impediments,” the DCL Chairman said. Mr Agyei-Yeboah suggested that the authenticity of documents of employees had to be ascertained while one was in active service and not in the old age of retirees. Source: GNA
