The Responsible Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (RAIL-KNUST) has held its maiden Robotics Challenge.
The event, designed to inspire innovation and problem-solving, aimed to encourage students to apply the skills they have acquired to address real-world challenges, ultimately impacting society and the globe.
Dr. Eunice Akyereko Adjei, the Women in Technology theme lead for RAIL, highlighted the significance of the challenge.
“The event showcases the ingenuity and technical expertise of participants as they tackle innovative robotics challenges. We are thrilled that the inaugural edition featured presentations from two junior high schools and four senior high schools,” she said.
Dr. Adjei added, “This is just the beginning. With the experience they’ve gained, we expect to see even more advanced modifications in the next cohort.”
Addressing participants and guests at the Cohort 1 Robotics Challenge, Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of RAIL-KNUST, emphasized the lab’s vision.
“What drives RAIL is the ‘master seed’ story. Though we have started small, I am confident that every one of these innovative solutions, given the right guidance, has the potential to transform key sectors of the economy,” he remarked.
He further stated, “We are looking into the future, and what we are doing here will assume global proportions. We are committed to training the entire human populace. The knowledge gained should translate into action and something useful.”
Prof. Kponyo also expressed gratitude to the mentors and participating teams from the various schools for their dedication and contributions to the event.
Participants underwent a year-long training program focused on Python programming and Arduino coding. They were tasked with identifying and solving problems in critical areas such as health, agriculture, energy, and education.
The challenge provided students with a platform to showcase their prototypes through group presentations, demonstrating their ability to develop innovative solutions and facilitate impactful experiences.

Two junior high schools: Ayeduase R.C. Junior High School and Good Shepherd Junior High School, participated, with Good Shepherd emerging as the winner. Among the four senior high schools: Dormaa Senior High School, Atebubu Senior High School, KNUST Senior High School, and Saint Louis Senior High School, Dormaa Senior High School took the top prize.
