President of the Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana, Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu, has urged the government to introduce 2% interest rates on loans to support and expand the farming activities of registered and recognised farmers.
Speaking on Joy News on Friday, December 5, he noted that the interest rates ranging from 22% to 33% make it difficult for farmers to carry out their work efficiently.
“We want a single-digit interest rate, which is 2%, to support farming activities. The interest rate is small to do our job very well. Interest rates are almost 33%, 22%, and 28%,” he noted.
According to him, he stated that a 2% interest rate would enable farmers to successfully implement the “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana” project and contribute to making the country a better place.
He argued that the locally produced food in Ghana surpasses imported products in quality. Citing tomatoes as an example, he said, “Our tomatoes are among the best.”
He also expressed concern over the decline in locally grown onions and shallots, particularly from the Volta Region, noting that they are now scarce in markets.
He further stated that “Ghanaians have developed a taste for Niger onions, which is very bad,” and urged Ghanaians to consume locally grown produce.
