Founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jerry John Rawlings has congratulated ex-President, John Mahama on his victory in the NDC’s primaries.
In a statement Monday, Mr. Rawlings urged the NDC to ready themselves for the 2020 general elections.
“While congratulating ourselves as a party for a relatively smooth process, we have to remember that this is only the first step of the task to convince the larger Ghanaian electorate,” the statement said.

Mahama won the primaries by a landslide
“I urge the candidate, the party leadership and all the grassroots to work together to re-embrace the NDC’s core principles in a bid to carve a positive message and image for the party,” it added.
The former President also lauded the other candidates in the primaries “for the dignified manner they conducted themselves throughout the process and for accepting the results in a mature and good-natured manner.”
NDC Primaries
The biggest opposition party went to the polls on Saturday to elect a flagbearer for the next year elections.
Ex-President Mahama who led the party to an embarrassing defeat in 2016 retained the confidence of delegates to secure more than 213,000 votes representing more than 95%.
In his victory speech, Mr. Mahama said “nothing, absolutely nothing will stop our march to the Flagstaff House -- renamed Jubilee House -- [Seat of government].”
