Scandal rocks CPP/PNC merger

Some functionaries of the Convention Peoples Party are being accused of allegedly bribing executives of the People’s National Convention to woo them into a proposed merger. Even though he has declined to mention names, a policy analyst of the PNC, Atik Mohammed who made the allegations told Joy News his people were offered huge sums of money to favour merger plans to save the CPP from collapse. He promised to disclose the names at the party’s next national executive meeting scheduled for the end of July. He however hinted that those behind the bribe are “some very high-profile people within the CPP, some of them seeking to become flagbearers and so on”. He argued that for the PNC to unite with an equally small party like the CPP would be tantamount to signing its “death warrant”. He also denied any high level meeting between the two parties in terms of unity as the public has been made to believe, but rather there has been what he termed media ambush by the CPP. “It is only the guerrilla tactics of some people in the CPP going to our regional executives luring them with a lot of things including money so that they will come out and declare that they are uniting with the CPP.” Atik Mohammed said the issue, as is being hyped in the media, has not been sanctioned by the PNC’s national executive committee, which is the highest decision-making body next to congress. He conceded that the PNC has problems with organization, for which he said steps are being taken to strengthen it in order to give Ghanaians the alternative, other than the NDC and NPP, that they have been yearning for. “But to unite with a party relatively weaker than you is just a way of signing your death warrant – you unite and you die that, is the point.” He further stated that the party is ready to win political power but will not lend itself to what he described as dangerous affiliations. Sounding very critical about the merger, Atik Mohammed also said there has not been any scientific prove that uniting the two parties would guarantee victory for the Nkrumaist parties in 2012. William Doworpkor Communications Director of CPP vehemently denied the bribery allegations, saying “There is no iota of truth in that.” He asked Ghanaians to disregard the allegations for the fact that Atik Mohammed fell short of mentioning names. “I just want to say that the CPP is determined and committed to presenting to the good people of Ghana a viable alternative to the NDC/NPP duopoly that has dominated the political landscape for the last two decades. And to that end we are leaving no stone unturned to achieve that aim.” For the way forward, Mr Doworpkor said the CPP is looking at building and strengthening its grassroots structures, offering policy alternatives, and forming a strong Nkrumaist front, explaining “that is where the CPP and PNC merger comes in”. He urged all Nkrumaists to come together as a united front to fight the NDC and NPP dominance. Story by Isaac Essel/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
