A military cum police team has arrested a number of suspected armed robbers in the Bawku municipality of the Upper East Region, following an exchange of gun fire between the security personnel and the suspects on Tuesday night.
Even though last night’s sporadic gunshots at Mazima, a village in Bawku, initially sparked fears in the residents, information available to Myjoyonline.com says the situation is now calm.
The Upper East Regional Minister, Mark Woyongo, who is in Bawku to assess the security situation there confirmed to Joy News that “There is no problem in Bawku”, adding that everybody is going about his or her normal business.
He said the security had information on the intended robbery three days ago and laid ambushed for the robbers. He said the gun battle ensued when the robbers, who were already on a wanted list for some crimes, were accosted.
Joy FM’s Upper East Regional Correspondent Joseph Osei said the incident started around 10 pm, but as at Wednesday afternoon "Bawku is calm and peaceful”.
He put the number of people arrested at six.
A statement signed by the Minister for Information John Tia Akologu disclosed that some of the suspects were wearing military uniforms.
“Following the interrogation of the suspects who have been arrested, the security agencies now have the identities of the other accomplices who managed to escape, and a manhunt for them has started within the Bawku area.”
The people of Bawku have been asked to go about their normal duties without any fear with the assurance that the security agencies are ready to clamp down on trouble makers in the area.
The statement indicated that last night’s incident has nothing to do with the conflict that has plagued the Bawku area for some time. It also encouraged the people to continue to provide information to the security agencies to guarantee their safety and security at all times.
