Kwaku Boakye, a form two student of the Philips Commercial School at Bantama in Kumasi has been arrested for his involvement in a robbery incident near Agric College at Agric Nsema, a suburb of Kumasi. Boakye, a General Arts student who is currently in police custody, claimed he was 17 years old and an indigene of Poano, near Ahwia Nkwanta in the Ashanti Region. The suspect was arrested when he, together with one Kofi Peprah, popularly known as Nana Peprah, aka Rasta, attempted robbing a taxi driver (name withheld) of his Hunydai Excel car with registration number AW 3685 Q, a mobile phone and money at about 8:30pm last Monday. According to the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, ACP Bright Oduro, the suspect claimed on Monday May 26, Peprah, a resident of Ahenema Kokoben, handed to him a box and asked him to accompany him to Agric Nsema. The suspect said he agreed to go but Peprah did not inform him about the purpose of the mission or what the box contained. At the Santase roundabout they boarded a taxi and on reaching a place near the college, Peprah asked the driver to stop so he could see a friend in the area. Boakye, who denied that he was a robber, said immediately the taxi stopped Peprah held the driver by the neck and ordered him to surrender his money and mobile phone, which he did. He however admitted violently taking only GH¢2 and a cellular phone from the driver while Peprah struggled with him, adding that when the victim started shouting ‘thief, thief, thief’, they both fled but he was apprehended by security guards at the college who later handed him over to the police. The driver, who corroborated the suspect’s story, said Peprah, who is at large, pulled a sharp knife and held him tightly from behind, ordering him to surrender everything on him or risk being slaughtered. He said as a result of the struggle the knife slashed his neck but he managed to rush to a hospital at Abuakwa for medical attention when the robbers fled, before later lodging a complaint with the Sofoline police. Meanhwile, ACP Oduro has warned members of the public to be very observant when boarding taxis at night. He as well warned taxi owners to avoid giving out their cars to spare drivers, majority of who he said conspired with robbers to embark on robbery sprees. The police indicated that Boakye would soon be arraigned while an intensive search has been mounted for the arrest of Nana Peprah.Source: Daily Guide
