Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has voiced his disapproval of the Supreme Court's decision to stay the execution of Speaker Alban Bagbin’s ruling, which declared four parliamentary seats vacant.
The decision by the court effectively halts the enforcement of Bagbin’s directive, shifting the balance of power in Parliament.
In an interview with Channel One TV on Friday, October 18, Tamakloe criticised the Supreme Court for handling the motion for abridgement on an ex-parte basis, meaning the NDC was not given the opportunity to respond before the decision was made.
He argued that such a significant ruling should have included input from all parties involved.
Tamakloe also expressed concerns about the legal precedent this decision sets, questioning the fairness of the process and the implications it may have for parliamentary democracy in Ghana.
He reaffirmed the NDC’s stance and suggested that the ruling could undermine the authority of the Speaker of Parliament.
“First of all, this ruling is extremely strange, you understand? The motion for abridgement of time should not go ex-parte. It is not the case that the NPP in parliament have been stopped from working, they voluntarily staged a walkout. They are normal proceedings with parliament.”
“If the Speaker of Parliament instructs the marshal of Parliament not to allow the four MPs’ presence in Parliament, what will the Supreme Court do?"
