The Ghanaian government is working to secure the release of about seventy of its nationals who have been arrested in Libya on suspicion of backing the embattled leader Col Muammar Gaddafi.
The suspects are reported to be in detention in the capital, Tripoli.
They are among a group of West Africans that were picked up on the orders of the rebel-led National Transitional Council.
The NTC has taken charge of a significant portion of the country, following the disappearance of former dictator Maummar Gaddafi.
The rebels have been rounding up persons they accuse of being mercenaries working for the fugitive leader.
One of the detained Ghanaians Hassan Abdullah told Joy News no charges have been preferred against them.
He said Ghana’s mission in Libya has been informed about their detention.
“The condition is very bad… no good treatment,” he narrated.
The suspects are appealing to government to act fast to save them.
Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammed Mumuni has confirmed the story to Joy News.
He however said the suspects are being held for immigration offences and assured Ghana’s mission in Tripoli is working around the clock to secure their release, but could not tell the number of Ghanaians involved.
