Aggrieved customers of defunct gold dealership Menzgold, are asking government to suspend the criminal prosecution of the company's CEO, Nana Appiah Mensah.

Instead, they want government to form a joint committee comprising Parliament, management of Menzgold and the customers to help in the retrieval and payment of locked-up funds.

At a news conference Wednesday, spokesperson for the customers, Francis Forson said, “government should help the Menzgold CEO to retrieve all monies owed him in Dubai and other places.”

Nana Appiah Mensah popularly known as NAM1 was picked up at the Kotoka International Airport last Thursday on arrival from Dubai, where he spent half a year in incarceration.

He had gone there in pursuit of his company’s funds in December 2018.

NAM1 was in detention in Dubai since December 7, 2018, when he was arrested in that country on charges of defrauding a business partner there.

After months of legal tussle, he was released as prosecutors could not prove their case of fraud against him.

A few weeks ago, it was reported that a Dubai court had ordered that he is paid $39 million as payment for gold Menzgold supplied to another company.

That apparently paved the way for him to come back home where he is expected to stand trial for abetment to carry out banking business without a licence, contrary to Section 6 (1) of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-taking Institutions Act.

He also faces a charge of defrauding by false pretence.

But the leader of the aggrieved customers said despite the charges proffered on NAM1 by Ghana police when he was in Dubai triggered anxiety, depression and in some cases death of some customers of the defunct gold dealership.

“We have no other interest in the prosecution and incarceration of NAM1 except to receive our locked-up investments,” Mr Forson said.

Meanwhile, an independent candidate in the 2012 election, Jacob Osei Yeboah, who is a consultant for the customers says politicians and top government officials are complicit in this case.
