The absence of speed guns and alcohol detectors has made it impossible for the Agona Swedru police to check some traffic offences.Divisional MTTU Commander, Superintendent of police Samuel Yankey, told the GNA in an interview that the situation had made it difficult to detect drunk drivers and excessive speeding which are the major causes of accidents on the Winneba/Accra highway.He appealed to the National Road Safety Commission, corporate bodies, financial institutions and other donors to assist the Unit to help enforce traffic regulations.Mr Yankey said the Swedru Divisional MTTU had stepped up road checks which started about two weeks ago to ensure an accident free Christmas holidays.He said since the exercise began, 64 drivers had been prosecuted and 6,650 Ghana Cedis fines had been imposed drivers.Thirteen drivers were bonded to be of good behaviour while four were cautioned and discharged by the Agona Swedru Circuit Court.He said the police are checking traffic offences such as the use of worn out tyres, lack of fire extinguishers, road worthiness and insurance certificates.Source: GNA
