Ghana’s wheelchair tennis men’s team has arrived in Accra after clinching bronze medal at the 2025 ITF BNP Paribas World Team Cup Africa Qualifiers in Rabat, Morocco.
The team, led by official Kwabena Afriyie-Siaw, secured third place with a commanding 3-0 victory over Kenya in the final match.
Athletes Bernard Yawson and Daniel Laryea, delivered an outstanding performance throughout the tournament, leaving a strong impression despite missing out on the gold medal, which went to Morocco, with Egypt claiming the silver.
“Our first match was not easy for us," Yawson said.
"We tried to win that game, but many things didn’t go our way. We did our best and kept trying to bring a medal to Ghana. I’m very happy because I said I had to bring a cup to Ghana and make a name, so this trophy we’ve won is one I’ll never forget."
Team captain Daniel Laryea also added: “By His grace, we thank God we made it. The weather wasn’t good for us and made us very uncomfortable, so we thank God we managed to come home with a trophy."
Team manager Kwabena Afriyie-Siaw urged the government and corporate bodies to provide more support in order to help the team succeed in the future.
“I’ll say we have a lot of work to do in terms of facilities and support. We need both corporate and government backing.
"The wheelchairs we use here in Ghana are metal, but in Morocco, Egypt, and I think Kenya, their wheelchairs are made of titanium, which is lighter, allowing them to move faster and improving mobility."
