John Barnes, a football legend, has stated that victory in football games is not determined solely by the speed, strength and skill of the players, but also by the team spirit and determination of the players.
John Barnes, who was speaking on Citi FM Monday morning, explained that team spirit and determination were behind the victories of many of the major football teams in the world. He cited Chelsea as an example, saying that they won most of their matches because of their spirit.
He felt it was important for football fans to empower their club and the coach rather than the players, noting that players usually do change clubs.
Mr. Barnes said many teams have problems mixing good players with the rest of the team. As a result, he said, big players see themselves as ‘big persons’ as any win is attributed to them, but loses are blamed on low performance on the part of the ‘lesser players’.
He expressed confidence in the ability of African teams including Ghana in winning the next World Cup, stating that all they need is determination because they have the quality. He reiterated that it was not always about the skill, speed and strength, but also the mentality of the players.
