The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has called off its strike. President of the Union, Peter Lumor confirmed the decision to Joy News, Wednesday. He said the decision to call off the strike was as a result of incessant appeals by the president and well meaning Ghanaians. TEWU joined the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) in a week-long strike over poor conditions of service, delays in the payment of arrears and irregularities in the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure. The strike had a toll on students who are still writing their exams in the basic and secondary levels of education. GNAT and NAGRAT on Tuesday announced that they had suspended the strike following several meetings with stakeholders as well as President John Mahama. TEWU said it has taken cue from the other teacher unions and particularly the numerous appeals from Ghanaians. Peter Lumor however reminded the government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to honour the promises made to them in order to avert future strikes.
