Bright Senior High School has been in the news lately for scoring high marks in the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Bright Senior High School is a private educational facility in the Kukurantumi District of the Eastern Region.
An analysis of the results of the 800 students who sat for the exit exams shows that 80% scored between 8As and 5As in the various subjects while 15% had, at least, 4As. Only 1% had just an A.
The school chalked the success despite the troubles it faced during the writing of the papers. The examination centre was changed from the school to the Ofori Panin Senior High School after a student clashed with an invigilator who had allegedly declined a request by another student to use the washroom.
But the school’s troubles during the examination seem to have had little impact on the institution’s pursuit of excellence.

The breakdown
The analysis showed that 98% of the 800 students scored A1 in Core Mathematics, while 1.2% had B2. The rest had B3.
The performance in Integrated Science was even better as 99% of students had A1. Also, 0.4% had B2 while 0.1% had B3.
Social Studies was even better as 99% of students had A1, 0.6% had B2 and 0.1% had B3.
The English Language seems to be a subject the school must work hard to improve as only 42% of the candidates had A1 with 37% scoring B2.

The secret
It seems the work done by the students has been achieved only by dint of hard work guided by long-term planning and strategy.
As part of its strategic planning, Bright Senior High School has printed it’s own textbooks and accompanying workbooks for each subject. The books cover the entire SHS syllabi and must be completed by every student before the WASSCE.
According to the Managing Director of Bright Senior High School, Mr. Bright Amponsah: “The textbooks have been written by people who have many years of experience in teaching. The workbooks have questions drawn from past papers. It’s only natural that our students will do well.”
Aside from these, Bright Senior High School has over the years been keen on the quality of teachers it recruits.
“We have made sure that a first degree will be the minimum qualification of our teachers. We want the best,” he said.
The school has two English Language textbooks that management says have been adapted to the needs of students. One of them, Knowledgefield English, was written by Kwabena Asare, a PhD student now teaching at Bright Senior High School.

Here are the rest of the books;

With a population of 2,500, Bright Senior High School’s strategy has been to plan ahead. With a tagline “building dreams, shaping the future” the school hopes to produce a solid crop of global leaders poised to change their world.
