Minister of Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe has expressed concern over persistent challenges in Ghana’s transport sector, emphasising the need for stronger collaboration among key ministries and stakeholders to improve efficiency.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Nikpe noted that the transport sector is multi-sectoral and requires coordinated efforts to function effectively.
He explained that past challenges often arose from institutions working in isolation, but the government has prioritised collaboration over the past year to address transport-related issues.
He revealed that recent engagements involving the Vice President and transport unions focused on tackling poor road conditions, which have negatively affected vehicle turnaround times. The ministry is also working to open inner perimeter roads and create designated parking and offloading spaces to reduce congestion.
Mr. Nikpe highlighted the role of the Ministry of Local Government in managing intra-city transport, noting that Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) are actively working to decongest streets. Plans are also underway to retool the Ayalolo bus system to improve urban transport.
The Transport Minister further disclosed that collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior has increased police presence on roads to ensure smoother traffic flow, while engagement with the Ministry of Trade aims to address high spare parts costs.
He recalled that the government negotiated a 15 percent reduction in transport fares last year, but drivers initially resisted due to high spare parts prices linked to currency instability. With the cedi now stable and fuel prices relatively steady, discussions are ongoing to reduce spare parts costs, including plans by the Trade Ministry to launch a price-monitoring app.
Mr. Nikpe added that the ministry plans to retool state transport agencies such as Metro Mass Transit and STC while intensifying road safety campaigns through the National Road Safety Authority.
He expressed optimism that these measures will help decongest cities, improve traffic flow, and enhance transport services nationwide.
