Vice President John Mahama has re-assured journalists of government’s commitment to promote press freedom in the country.
It follows recent moves by the police to drag some journalists to court on the criminal charge of causing fear and alarm with their publications.
He particularly distanced himself from the recent charge slapped on Joy FM’s Acting News Editor after the station reported of alleged threats on the lives of members of the Ghana Real Estates Developers Association, affirming that government had no hand in it.
In a speech read on his behalf by Information Minister John Tia at the Ghanaian Times National Development Forum, Mr. Mahama noted a vibrant and robust media was crucial for good governance.
“This perhaps an opportunity to issue a note of reassurance to the media that government is not interested in muscling the press.
“We are not interested in seeing journalist in jail with their views or merely because they said something which the authorities did not agree with.
According to him the government had no “invisible hand” in the saga involving Joy FM and Ghanaian Times.
“We believe that a government that succeeds in putting one journalist in jail has only succeeded in giving birth to a dozen others more critical.”
