There was a violent clash between past and newly elected executives of the Ghana Private Road Transport Users Association (GPRTU) in the Volta Region on Monday morning in Ho.
National Executives arrived in the Region to swear into office executives of Ho Branch 2, who had been elected since April 2022, but the supposed swearing-in turned violent as existing leaders attempted to block access to the secretariat housed in a two-storey building.
The GNA learnt that the past leadership had sought an injunction on the elections and succeeded in holding on to power for more than two years while pursuing the matter as far as the Court of Appeal.
The disposed executives resisted Wednesday’s takeover even in the presence of the Police and managed to lock up the various offices.
The Regional Police Command had to intervene, and after a meeting with the two factions and the national executives, the five new executives were sworn in.
Rolex Miheso Welfare Chairman of the Tudu Lorry Park, wielding a mandate from the National Executive Council of the GPRTU, first presented a letter of dismissal to the immediate past executives.
He then proceeded to swear in Dickson Dzogbatse as the new Chairman, and Attipoe Lawrence as the Vice.
Godwin Tay was sworn in as Secretary, while Wisdom Kpor and Christian Doe became Trustee and Second Trustee, respectively.
The Welfare Chairman read out the results of the 2022 elections and declared the winners before proceeding to administer oaths of office and secrecy.
Mr Miheso urged a smooth transition of power and a united working front to advance the progress of the transport service and the Union.
The new Branch Chairman promised peace and coexistence and said would revamp operations to improve efficiency in the line, which runs from Ho to the national capital.
