The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Northern Region says it is still relying on water pumps installed in 1972 to supply water to a population that has grown from fewer than 100,000 people to more than 1.4 million today.
Currently, the Dalun water treatment plant produces just 35,000 cubic meters of water daily, far below the required 90,000 cubic meters needed to adequately serve the region.

Speaking to the media during a tour of the plant by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources, Regional Chief Manager Steven Amihere Mensah highlighted the aging infrastructure and persistent power outages as the plant’s biggest challenges.
He stressed the need for urgent investment in new equipment and a more reliable power supply to ensure residents have consistent access to safe drinking water.
