The Executive Secretary of the Ghana Real Estate Development Association (GREDA), Sammy Amegayibor has denied any member of the association ever received death threats over their earlier stance on the Government of Ghana’s deal with STX Construction Company of Korea, which compelled it to backtrack on their opposition. Joy news and myjoyonline.com earlier on Tuesday reported that members of the association had received death threats for opposing the contract amidst fears losing their contracts with government. But Mr. Amegayibor says that can only be a figment of somebody’s imagination. Speaking on Asempa fm’s on Ekossii Sii, Sammy Amegayibor said, as far as he is concerned none of the members has received any death threats from anybody for petitioning parliament on the STX housing deal. According to him, prior to the latest development, GREDA had no information about the STX housing deal until they met with the select committee on works and housing and finance about the housing deal. Mr. Amegayibor added that GREDA will by Thursday send their proposal to the Ministry of Works and Housing for consideration. Under the STX deal, 200,000 housing units are to be constructed across the country at a cost of 10 billion dollars. GREDA’s decision to soften its stance on the housing deal has come as a surprise to many, given its initial insistence that the STX housing deal was bad for the country. Their criticism echoed that of former CPP flagbearer, Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, local think tank group IMANI and the opposition NPP as well as some policy analysts that the deal does not make much provision for local content and financing.
