Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, Western Region Minister on Sunday asked for discipline and hard work among the citizenry to propel the country into a great and prosperous nation.
He acknowledged the contributions of the country’s forefathers, who he said brought about freedom through their great work and dedication to duty.
“Indeed discipline and hard work is an essential pre-requisite for a better Ghana,” he stressed.
Mr Aidoo made the request during the regional celebration of the 54th Independence Day anniversary at the Jubilee Park in Takoradi.
He noted that indiscipline was fast destroying the moral fibre of the society, “and calls for a concerted effort by traditional, religious and State institutions to rise and nib the canker in the bud”.
Mr Aidoo called for the reformation or eradication of outmoded cultural practices to enhance the development process.
Touching on education, the Minister promised government’s support in providing the needed infrastructure to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, which would make the youth more capable in managing their own affairs.
The sidelight of the anniversary was the presentation of awards to students who excelled in the 2010 Basic Education and Certificate Examination (BECE).
Master Bernard Pobee, formerly of St Augustine Junior High School (JHS), Axim, emerged the best student.
Ms Charlotteb Adjanor Doku, formerly of Bethel Methodist JHS, Cape Coast, took the second prize while Master
Ankamah Nelson, formerly of St Augustine JHS took the third prize.
Biniani-Anhwiaso-Bekwa District emerged the regional winner as the best performing BECE district.
