WWE suspends Roman Reigns for 30 days

WWE has suspended Roman Reigns for 30 days for violating drug rules in its "talent wellness program".

The American wrestling organisation hasn't revealed exactly when the violation happened.

Roman Reigns, whose real name is Joseph Anoa'i, lost his heavyweight title two days ago to Seth Rollins, who then lost it to Dean Ambrose, at the Money in the Bank show.

The former three-time WWE champion has since said sorry to fans on Twitter.

He said: "I apologize to my family, friends and fans for my mistake in violating WWE’s wellness policy. No excuses. I own it.".

Roman's next fight is likely to be at Battleground on 24 July in Washington DC, where he's due to face Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose in a "triple threat" match.

However, some commentators in America think he may be pulled from the line-up and could return at SummerSlam instead on 21 August in New York.

The 31-year-old has headlined two WrestleMania events in a row and has competed in the main event in 12 of the last 19 pay-per-view events in America.

Until this suspension, Roman Reigns had never been in trouble in the wrestling world and had only suffered one minor injury.

His violation's happened less than a month before WWE's draft on 19 July.

It'll see Monday night's Raw and Thursday night's SmackDown split permanently with different fighters on each show.

Roman Reigns won't now be able to attend the draft despite being on all its advertising.

WWE introduced its drug testing programme in 2006.

The organisation says: "The WWE Talent Wellness Program is unique in the entertainment industry and is considered to be as good as or better than the testing programs initiated by major sports leagues, government agencies and corporations."

Wrestlers are suspended for 30 days for a first violation, 60 days for a second and are fired for a third.

Roman Reigns' cousin is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who also wrestles as well as appearing in Hollywood films.
