A youth activist of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Ebenezer Arkutu has been elected as the Chairman of Ayawaso Central constituency of the party in the Greater Accra Region.
Arkutu, who is the General Secretary of Reform for Youth Empowerment, polled 256 votes to beat his closest contender Rev. Sophia Dei who had 125 of the valid votes cast while Mr. Peter Adika, a former constituency chairman, got only 88 in a hotly contested election on Monday.
The incumbent chairman, Sumalia Dickson did not seek re-election in a battle in which majority of the incumbent lost to their challengers - Women and Deputy Women Organizers, Secretary, Organizer as well as the Propaganda Secretary all lost their positions.
The day also saw the election of Forster Ahianyo as Vice-Chairman, the Secretary position went to Michael Semenhyia with Johnson Akey as the Deputy Secretary. Other elected executives include: Organizer, Lord Joshua Kpabitey; Deputy Organizer, Karim Danjuman; Women Organizer, Nancy Tedeku; Deputy Women Organizer, Samira Ibrahim; Treasurer, Akweley Amui; and Deputy Treasurer, Agnes Nana Mensah.
The rest are: Propaganda Secretary, Papa Bisiw; Deputy Propaganda Secretary, Tommy Thompson; Youth Organizer, Godwin Dogbey (incumbent); and Deputy Youth Organizer, Emmanuel K. Donu (incumbent).
In his victory speech, Ebenezer Arkutu promised to lead the Constituency, particularly the youth to take advantage of the “increasing opportunities that the government is creating” as well as ensuring that the National Democratic Congress retain power in 2016.
He also pledged to work tirelessly to wrest the Ayawaso Central parliamentary seat from the New Patriotic Party ridding on the back of the youth who are eager to see a change in the constituency.
