Zola and Matthaus penned for Black Stars job?

41-year-old Gianfranco Zola as coach of the Black Stars sounds interesting does it not? Bold moves generate bold responses. If anyone would care to listen, this is the right time to show that Ghana football has matured and made positive strides on, as well as off the field. For now I would refrain from commenting on the GFA hunt for Zola who is assistant coach of the Italian U21 team. His good friend Marcel Desailly may yet be a king maker even if he is not ready for the crown yet. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) should realise that the excellent work they put in to qualify for Germany 2006 may be classified as a fluke if South Africa 2010 is a no-go-show for the Black Stars. Even if it was a fluke let us do away with mediocrity....it takes you so far but then when you come up against better opposition you will always be shown your level. Immitation is a very expensive business. Remember Brazil at Germany 2006 and Cameroon at Ghana 2008? We should avoid a waterloo pre-or during South Africa 2010. I just witnessed Manchester United crowned English Premier League Champions. That is the 10th time under Sir Alex Feguson! On my journey back home what do I hear? Lothar Matthäus looking for the Black Stars job? The intellligent player who captained West Germany to victory at the 1990 World Cup in Italy and also Germany's record capped international was a ''tenacious and dynamic sweeper with a devastating shot, but also managed to acquire a reputation for underhandedness''. Nobody should dismiss Matthäus, he was voted The European Footballer of the Year in 1990 and has fantastic experience as a player with clubs like Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, New York Metro Stars. But please no! Marcel Desailly wants to coach the Black Stars but not now. He is a smart young man and his comments have been spot on. Desailly's life training and his hugely successful career would have taught him one thing. Always prepare twice as hard for a task you have never undertaken before. There would be no harm in bringing to the GFA fold to 'learn'. His wealth and stature does not appear to have diminished his humility. The problem is that he may come across as ''too European'' and that could spell trouble for the World Cup winner especially from some insecure FA officials whose personal interests always figure higher than the team. My feeling is that the GFA would love to land the best coach in the business and throw the 2010 challenge at him. That is just my feeling. But the reality is that the GFA would be thinking about money first and quality second! Who would pay for a quality coach asking no less than $40,000 a month? Glo did it in Nigeria when Voghts was in charge. Perhaps the GFA has already started to court MTN or Goldfields? Let us assume that the GFA move up a notch to recruit a coach. That would mean paying a minimum of $25,000 a month. Who would Ghana get for that amount and would he be the best man? What about a local coach...hands up if you support the idea! Le Roy was a good coach but had his flaws as did all his predecessors. Even the much maligned Ratomir Dujkovic who took Ghana to the Promised Land is currently on a basic $45,000 a month coaching China's Olympic team. The Chinese recruited him after a lengthy tracking and background search. Including an official letter to the GFA about Dujkovic's conduct?''...he makes things happen where ever he goes'' was the official reason according to Sen Li Zeu of Team China 2008. Interesting when it comes to CV's and what people really think. I just had a lengthy conversation with a current key Black Stars player. ''As for us we dey....whoever dem go bring, we go play'' That was his only comment regarding the search for a new coach. I respect his honesty. After all, what more can the players do? So here we find ourselves in a fix we should not really be in. Le Roy's business interests within and out of the team had conflict of interest written all over. The GFA realised this would cause major problems not least in the balanced selection of players. Those of us in whom some players confide, knew this all along and it was a time bomb waiting to explode. At least the FA received a request by Renard Herve, a member of the technical team of the Black Stars to take up a coaching job with Zambia. He saw Le Roy's exit coming like an express train so he got off the tracks. What about Sellas Tetteh? Well the former long term assistant is also hungry to prove that he is a coach and a man of his own. I hope he proves his critics wrong and silences them. The big question is when will we groom our own thorough bred coach to conquer the world at the apex of football? The beautiful game is indeed just that....but beauty is in the eye of the beholder so GFA, look in the mirror and the answers to this coaching puzzle may be staring you right in the face.
