The deadline for proposals to review the constitution of the opposition New Patriotic Party has closed and 66 documents are up for consideration. The party called for the proposals as part of its self-assessment programme following its defeat in the 2008 presidential election. The proposals, according to NPP General Secretary, Nana Ohene Ntow, touch on issues ranging from the name and emblem to the organization of the party.Ohene Ntow disclosed that officials of the NPP are conferring with the legal team of the party to ‘synthesize’ the proposals for decision by the party’s congress to be held later this year. The NPP’s loss to the ruling NDC in the last election torched off heated debates among party loyalists who faulted top guns of the party for what they said was a poor showdown in marshaling enough support to win the race. The constitution of the party’s electoral college features prominently in many of the proposals submitted for consideration, Ohene Ntow disclosed. Also to be reviewed is the number of aspirants for the party’s flagbearership.Seventeen candidates filed nominations and contested for the presidential candidacy of the party in the last congress of the party.“There have also been very incisive and interesting proposals as to limiting the number of people who end up at congress as contestants,” the General Secretary stressed.Ohene Ntow disclosed that the submission of the proposals is consistent with Article 19 of the party’s constitution which mandates persons who wish to seek reviews in its laws to file their convictions, at least, two months to the party’s national congress. He also said the party would circulate the proposals among its delegates before congress.Asked how the party would deal with the many proposals on the table, Nana Ntow said a national executive committee meeting of the NPP would soon be convened to “flush out some of the issues.”Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com
