940 workers axed by Vodafone

Some 940 workers of telecommunications firm, Vodafone are expected to end their tenure with the company, at least as employees by this Wednesday. They form the last batch of workers who stayed on from the former Ghana Telecom to have been affected by a downsizing exercise after Vodafone acquired the national telecoms provider. A significant number of the 940 are said to have already left at the end of November with just about 140 due to exit today. Officials of the company however explain that most of the retrenched workers have already been re-engaged as workers with companies and contractors that provide various services to Vodafone. Head of Corporate Communication at Vodafone Carmen Bruce-Annan told Joy Business the entire exercise is aimed at turning around the company’s fortunes. “When Vodafone actually took this business, the business was losing money at an alarming rate so it becomes clear then that something had to change,” she said. The company at a point was said to be making a monthly loss of about 35 million Ghana cedis a month. Ms Bruce-Annan however said the restructuring program is beginning to yield results. The final batch of retrenchment should bring to about two thousand the number of workers who have been affected by the downsizing either voluntarily or compulsorily. Source: Joy Business/Ghana
