I want the nation's support: Appiah

When Kwesi Appiah takes to training in Ghana's first session on Tuesday, he expects to do so with the full backing of the whole nation for every member of his squad.

Ghana, chasing a third consecutive appearance at the World Cup will get their preparations started in Accra for next Tuesday's first leg of the qualifying play-off against Egypt.

With some criticism directed at certain members of his playing squad, the Black Stars coach demanded that the country stands as one for the battle ahead rather than according some players with a lukewarm reception.

“I fully appreciate the many views that come from the fans. I respect their opinions,” Appiah told www.ghanafa.org on Monday.

“Once someone has been chosen to represent the nation, it's important that the whole nation stands by him. It's about the nation and not personalities.

“It's the nation that counts. Every player will go out there with pride to try and win matches for his nation.”

According to Appiah, the players will need to feel the love of the supporters they represent, which serves as a big motivation.

“It is not necessary to target a player and make him feel not a part of his country. Whoever is chosen needs the nation's support.”

“The support spurs them. And it [support] can make the difference in certain games. They need it and Ghanaians will have to tally behind them.” he said.

Ghana will host the first leg at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Two-leg ties will be played between both nations with the aggregate winner going to the finals in Brazil next year.
