The Managing Director of MultiTV has urged students of tertiary institutions to take an interest in the practical aspect of their courses to enhance their chances of getting employment after school.

Santokh Singh Ram said even though academic qualifications are important for one to enter the job market, one’s ability to meet the actual demands of the job is very much needed to ensure a successful career.

Speaking at the official launch of the fifth anniversary celebration of the GH Media School in Accra on Saturday, he commended the institution for having lecturers who were mainly from the practical field of journalism.

That, he said, served as a good start for the students.

Managing Director of TV Africa, Ekow Blankson, who was also at the ceremony, urged the students to become relevant in their chosen career once they enter the job market.

He said, as newcomers in the media landscape, it was important for the students to be humble and very tolerant and learn from those with more experience.

"Try to have some passion for the job you do. Have the right attitude," Mr Blankson said.

Managing Director of the Atinka Media Village, Albert Tuffuor, also advised students to be judicious with their time, saying, "as students, every moment of your time counts".

Mr Tuffuor said one’s success in the job market was dependent on their understanding of how things worked, thus students should read more around their respective courses and do as much research as possible.

He encouraged students to learn sufficiently to prove themselves worthy in the job market.

Rector of GH Media School, Leslie Addo Listowel, said the institution’s curricular was designed to produce journalists who were equipped with practical journalistic skills.

He said he is working with his administrators to come up with more innovations to improve upon what was being done.

Themed, "Bridging the gap between Industry and the Academia," the weeklong celebration involves a number of activities including a career seminar, a fun trip, a durbar and a thanksgiving service among others.
