The Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) is investigating allegations by drug couriers that they pay huge sums of money to some officials of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to avoid arrest. The allegations have been made by people arrested at the KIA while attempting to smuggle narcotic drugs to Europe.Between last Thursday and Sunday seven couriers busted at the airport, allegedly claimed that they had been aided by airport officials introduced to them by those who supplied them the drugs, NACOB Public Relations Officer, Francis Amoah, told the Times yesterday. The officials advise the couriers on the time to report at the airport for departure formalities, time to enter the departure hall and which queue to join to avoid detection, he said.According to Mr Amoah all this while, the couriers keep in touch until they go through departure formalities successfully. But when things go wrong, such as being arrested, the communication between them stops.Mr Amoah said NACOB is collaborating with the seven suspects to assist the security agencies to apprehend the officials involved. They suspects include George Weah Karperh, 42, Jonathan Boroabre Mensah, 40, Bismark Kweku Kyei, 24 and Chester Appau, 31.The rest are, Maxwell Darteh, 47, Vincent Koffie Sarabi, 39 and Francis Kwadwo Yeboah Damoah, 44.Mr Amoah said Karperh, who holds Dutch passport, was arrested at about 10.30 p.m. when he was going through.Source: The Ghanaian Times
