The Northern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), in collaboration with the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), on Wednesday despatched eight water-tankers to the Yendi Municipality to help address the acute water shortage that has hit the area recently.
The Daka River, which has been the main source of water supply to the people, has completely dried up leaving the people with no alternative than use unsafe water.
Mr. Alhassan Mahmoud, the Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation, on behalf of Alhaji Mustapha Ali Idris, Northern Regional Minister, led a team of personnel to deliver the water to the people.
Water tankers provided by the GWCL, the Prisons Service, Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) and Zoomlion were used to draw water from Tamale.
Alhaji Mohammed Habib Tijani, the Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, said the tankers would supply water to health facilities, educational institutions and the police stations and then to the general public.
He expressed fears about the outbreak of epidemic if urgent solutions were not found to the water crisis.
Mr. Samuel Mensah, Regional Chief Manager of the GWCL, said the Company had contacted its headquarters for funds to sustain water tanker service to the Municipality until a solution was found to the problem.
He blamed the drying up of the river to human activities such as farming along the riverbanks and unhealthy cultural practices.Source: GNA
