Professor David Millar, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS), has urged students not to see their elevation to leadership positions as a means for self-enrichment.
Professor Millar made the call at an orientation and handing-over ceremony of the Students Representative Council (SRC) of the UDS in Tamale.
He said students must always remember that they have been elevated to leadership positions to serve those who "pushed" them there, but not to use it as an “opportunity to become lords over them”, saying, "let everybody see that you are capable of serving your people".
He exhorted student leaders to make themselves accessible to the people and always be ready to listen to their grievances.
Prof. Millar observed that some people in their quest to seek leadership roles always makes themselves available for the position, but the story was different after they "get to the top".
For him, student leaders must use the opportunity to write good testimonies of themselves for consideration for future leadership mantles.
He said good student leaders were those who could effectively combine academic work with leadership duties.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor urged the student leaders to be innovative and to always use the appropriate channels to forward their grievances. "Go beyond the ordinary to show that you are a good leader", he said.
Mr Abukari Arnold Mashud, the outgoing SRC President urged students to keep away from politicians, who would want to use them for their selfish gains, adding that, sincerity and integrity should be their watchwords.
Mr Naab Alphonsa, SRC President of the University appealed to the university authorities to review the "unfair" residential fee that students of the Wa campus are charged.
He said it was unfortunate that whiles landlords at Wa were charging "considerable" fees of GH¢100 as rent for students, the authorities charged GH¢250, which was too "exorbitant"
