The Convention People’s Party (CPP) says it would not enter into alliance with the People’s National Convention (PNC).The announcement comes hours after a proposed alliance between the two parties was objected to by the National Executive Council of the PNC.Key members of the PNC opposed the alliance saying the CPP flag bearer, Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom rushed to make public a proposed alliance which was yet to be sealed.But the CPP said it is also backing out of the alliance because kingpins in the party have expressed worry about certain strong words Dr Edward Mahama, PNC leader used during a press conference he called on Thursday which lashed out at the CPP for a breach of trust.During a visit to Joy Fm studious in Accra, the First National Chairman of the CPP, Dr Abu Sakara said its intention to enter into the deal with the PNC was a bid to satisfy a grassroots request to garner more support for the December polls.He however stated that the CPP has brighter fortunes even without an alliance.“We believe that the CPP is on the ascendancy and we believe that we can actually go it alone in this election and make progress,” he said. He challenged the PNC’s commitment to the proposal saying that the leak of information into the media should not have generated the various unfavourable reactions it was met with.Mr Sakara rebuffed notions that Dr Nduom’s announcement that the two parties had entered into an alliance was braced in ill motive.“What was clear was that, he let people understand that both parties had reached an understanding as to how to proceed with things in order that we’ll have an alliance for this election.If in the process there were hiccoughs, that is another matter,” he stated.Looking at the future, the CPP does not foresee another attempt to forge an alliance with the PNC, at least not for December’s election, in the light of the husky reaction that came from the latter’s supporters, Dr Sakara said.For now the CPP says would rather concentrate on ensuring that ordinary members of the party remain committed to the party to ensure a win in Election 2008.Story by Fiifi Koomson
