A strange rusty container washed off the coast of Aflao this morning is drawing the nation’s security apparatus towards the border town.Currently the Police and officials of the Bureau of National Investigations are examining the old container. The holed cylindrical drum is said to measure 130cm (Width), 230cm (Length) and 120cm in height and tied to a broken anchor.Local fishermen who first spotted the container and drew it ashore, before alerting the police, suspect it could contain drugs. But Assistant Superintendent of Police, Peter Yakubu, Commander of the Ketu South Police, says the contents can only be known when it is opened and assured that security measures have been installed pending the arrival of security experts from Accra. He told Asempa FM that his only prayer is that the container, which appeared to have stayed on the high seas for a long while, does not turn out to contain toxic material. That concern, plus a precaution against it turning out as an explosive, has informed security arrangements to secure it.He said it was too early for people to speculate that the ‘rotten’ metal drum, which bore inscriptions ‘SH’ and does not state its origin, contained cocaine and asked the public to await the findings of experts. He also told Asempa FM that the Police Headquarters in Accra had been informed of the presence of the container as well as the Volta Regional Police Commander.DCOP Ambrose Derry, the Regional Commander, also confirmed the presence of the strange find and told Asempa FM in a phone interview that a team of investigators led by the Regional CID, had been to the scene to take photographs of the container for onward action.
