About 3,000 cartons of unwholesome meat products belonging to Servistar Cold Store were on Thursday destroyed by the Food and Drugs Board (FDB) at the Kpone refuse dump site near Tema.Briefing the media, Mr Kwame Nsah-Poku, Head of Food Unit of FDB, Tema branch, said a month ago, the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) revealed that Servistar Cold Store had repackaged meat products believed to be unwholesome for public consumption. He said the Tema Port Police was contacted and investigations conducted indicated that the assorted meat products were unwholesome for human consumption.According to Mr Nsah-Poku, investigations conducted also revealed that conditions for storage of meat products at the cold store were not up to the standards."The required standard of storing meat product should be between negative 16 and 18 degrees."He added that the company did not have any device to check the temperature of the cold store in case of power fluctuation.Mr Nsah-Poku said the FDB closed down the cold store and sought permission from the law court to destroy the products. He called on the public to draw the attention of FDB to such practices for prompt action.Mr Manly Spain, the owner of the company, declined to comment on the issue.Source: GNA
