A JOINT security patrol team has apprehended one of the people suspected to be behind frequent thefts at the University of Ghana, Legon. The Legon Police and the university’s security personnel arrested Nana Opoku Agyemang, 21, a storekeeper at Fasonhog Foods Limited at Tema, after he stole some items from the Legon Hall and proceeded to the Akuafo Hall for a similar act at about 2.30 a.m. on Thursday. Luck eluded Agyemang when a student spotted him in the act and sounded the alarm. Items found on him on his arrest included two pairs of trouser jeans, two mobile phones, a laptop computer and a cash of ¢186,000.00. Briefing the Times, the Legon District Police Commander, DSP Michael Teku, said Agyemang was arrested by some students with the help of the patrol team at the Akuafo Hall. He said Agyemang had entered one of the rooms and in the process of stealing, his hands touched one of the students who was asleep. When he was questioned by the student, he said, he was a student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi and had come to look for him. His answer did not convince the student who raised the alarm that drew the attention of other students and the police patrol team. Agyemang who spoke to the Times said he did not know what led him into the crime, claiming that he did not even know what he was going to do with the items, since he had no use for them. He said he went to Legon to visit a friend called Kwame Tonto of the Commonwealth Hall, but did not meet him. However, he met another friend from Kumasi and they decided to watch a football match on Television after which his friend left him. Mr. Teku said the police had earlier arrested five other persons for loitering and using the Legon Hall TV room as their abode. They are Nana Kwesi, Neequaye Grua, Bernard Kwadwo Akwamoah, Ishmael Abubakah and Kofi Nyarko, who were released on bail pending further investigations into whether they are linked to the thefts on campus.
