After a controversial poll that put the opposition National Democratic Congress ahead of the ruling New Patriotic Party, the NCCE is up again but to educate media practitioners.Mr Haruna Hushieni Sulemana, Upper East Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), on Thursday urged the media not to neglect its role of consolidating Ghana’s fledging democracy.
Speaking at a day’s forum with media practitioners in the region on how to ensure peaceful elections this year, he said it was expected that the media would be circumspect and responsible in their reportage of political statements and events.
Mr Sulemana said journalist should educate the youth on their civic responsibilities noting that because of ignorance, most youths were used by selfish politicians to foment trouble.
He said to ensure peace his outfit had put in measures such as identifying political hot-spots during the elections, formation of the inter-dialogue committees, and monitoring and enforcement committees.
Mr Abraham Demmie, Acting Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association in charge of Upper East Region, also urged colleague journalists not to compromise their profession in any way for any politician and his selfish interest. He entreated media practitioners to refuse gifts and bribes from politicians, who would want to use them to cause trouble in the forthcoming elections.Source: GNA
