The Togo Embassy roundabout has been reconstructed and named Akufo-Addo Circle in memory of Mr Edward Akufo-Addo, President of the Second Republic.Father of the NPP presidential candidate who was also a member of the Big Six, Mr. Akufo-Addo ruled Ghana from 1969-72.The reconstruction, which involved landscaping and gardening, fencing of the circle, a six-foot bronze statue and lighting, was undertaken in partnership with Ghana Telecom.
The statue of Mr Edward Akufo-Addo was unveiled by the La Mantse Nii Tetteh Kpobi Tsuru III.
Inaugurating the Circle, Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson, Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, said it became necessary to name the circle after the former President because of the dedicated and prominent role he played in the political emancipation of Ghana.
"A nation that does not honour its heroes is not worth dying for,” he said.
Nii Adjiri said when he assumed office he pledged to contribute his quota to the beautification and sanitation programmes in Accra.
He said AMA decided that when the roundabouts in the city were developed they could become tourist sites and therefore entered into a relationship with the private sector under a public-private partnership.
Mr Dickson Oduro Nyaning, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Telecom, said that the company’s cell phone service, Onetouch, was proud to be associated with the project. He pledged the support GT to help put Ghana on the tourist map through such projects.
"We believe that our investment in this area can go a long way to improve the country's image as a tourism destination,” he said.Source: GNA
