The Commanding Officer of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), ACP Daniel Julius Avorga, has expressed disappointment over Parliament’s revision of the Road Traffic Act.Parliament amended the Road Traffic Act and revised the penalties for the various offences, reducing each by 90%.The revised Act is pending presidential assent.However, Mr. Avorga, told Joy News that the current state of the Act would not serve the best interest of the nation.“I don’t think it is the best thing that would happened to this country, when disciple within the driving popularity does not improve, when people are killed almost everyday on our roads and highways. “We should be careful we don’t give the wrong signals to show that we rather condone the indiscipline and all those things that are happening.”Touching on bribery, Mr. Avorga said his outfit would deal ruthlessly with officers who indulge in the act and also called for actions to be taken against members of the public who give bribes to the police.“We condone when people say they gave money to the policeman, “that person, he said “is admitting he has committed an offence and nobody seems to be so conscious of the fact that a person admitting a guilt should be punished.”Story by Isaac Essel
