A member of the NDC parliamentary caucus Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak has asked government to intervene in the ongoing hajj crisis to prevent yet another fiasco. He said the performance of hajj is a government of Ghana – Saudi arrangement for which reason a single individual or group should not be allowed to hijack. His comments come in the wake of tussle over who has the right to organize this year’s hajj pilgrimage. The hajj council is criticizing the Chief Imam, over the formation of a committee to oversee the organisation of this year’s pilgrimage. According to the hajj council, the Chief Imam has no right to organize a pilgrimage and has threatened court action should he go ahead. Alhaji Mubarak says the NDC anticipated yet another problem with the upcoming pilgrimage and alerted government, but was surprised government did nothing to rectify the problem. In an interview with Joy News Alhaji Mubarak described the situation as shocking and embarrassing. However Prince Imoro Andani special assistant in the office of the president says government will not hijack the organisation of the hajj but will only intervene if asked to do so by the Moslem groups. Imoro Andani was unable to confirm who is the legitimate party to organize this year’s hajj, but indicated the Chief Imam Sheik Nuhu Sharabutu, as the leader of all Moslem groups has the responsibility of overseeing a successful hajj. “But with the growing controversy, government will soon take a decision,” he added.
