Four NDC activists have been charged by the police in Ejura in the Ashanti Region for causing unlawful harm and damage in the just ended limited registration exercise.
Explaining the circumstances under which they were arrested and charged, ACP Takyi Poku Mampong Divisional Commander of the police told Joy news, that a report was filed by an electoral officer that the four disrupted the registration process at his center.
According to the said report, one of the activists armed with gun shot Kofi Abraham, a prospective voter in the leg when he was about to register.
“The young man sustained serious fracture and was sent to the Ejura government hospital for treatment” he added.
Asked why the delay in arresting the four, ACP Takyi Poku said the police did not think it was then the right time.
“At that material time, and in the wisdom of the police, we thought it was not necessary to effect the arrest but criminal cases could be pursued at any time”
The arrest has been the source of political controversy, with the opposition NDC accusing the Police of selective justice and colluding with government to rig the election.
Earlier reports by Joy correspondents were rife about confrontations between activists of the two leading parties, the NPP and NDC which might have prompted the arrest.
NDC MP for Ejura, Mohammed Yusif incensed by the arrest demanded the immediate release of the four, saying their continued stay in police custody will spark violence.
Hon. Yusif in an interview with Joy news complained about the manner in which the four were arrested, describing it as unfortunate.
But ACP Takyi maintained the four were invited by the police, but failed to turn up which necessitated a dawn swoop in their homes to effect the arrest.
The four are currently on bail.
