The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), generated 1.8 million Ghana cedis from its non-core functions, Mr Joe Osei-Owusu, out-going Chief Executive Officer announced at a send off ceremony last Saturday.The amount more than tripled the 2006 figure of 519,000 Ghana cedis that the Authority realised, representing over 300 per cent increase.In addition, the authority for the first half of this year has raked in a whooping 1.2 million Ghana cedis and is expected to generate over 2.0 million Ghana cedis by December.He said that the huge income generated was realized through the openings of offices across the country aimed at decentralising the Authority's activities and to ensure efficiency in service delivery.Mr Osei-Owusu said the DVLA had also outsourced some of its activities to private agencies that were pre-financing some development projects aimed at restructuring and income generation.The outgoing Chief Executive said though his six years tenure was full of challenges, quite a lot had been achieved in areas such as training of personal, expansion and construction of offices including a new head office complex and a residence for the Chief Executive.Mr Cheyuo Musah, Director Driver, Training, Testing and Licensing, noted that the era of unprofessional conduct was passed and added that the authority had acquired modern equipment to enable it work effectively.Mr George Ackom, Director, Vehicle Inspection and Registration also said the DVLA was working in collaboration with other stakeholders in the transport industry to ensure that only well-trained and skilful drivers plied the road.Source: GNA
