An Ashaiman-based creditor, Madam Vida Wornu, had the shock of her life in the morning on Thursday, September 9, this year, when she went to a debtor's house to demand her money.
Her debtor, Madam Enyonam Avevor, 39, did not take kindly to her presence and in the ensuing confrontation Enyonam Avevor allegedly poured a bucketful of boiling beans on her.
Madam Wornu's one-year-three- month-old son who was on his mother's back at the time, also sustained severe burns all over his head, face and chest.
When the report got to Mr Edward Kpornu that his wife and son were burnt, he rushed to the house of the debtor in their Afariwa neighbourhood to confront her but the debtor allegedly vented her spleen on him as well.
A report was therefore lodged with the Ashaiman police who went to effect the arrest of Madam Enyonam Avevor, but she was nowhere to be found. Subsequently, a medical report form was issued to the victims to attend hospital.
Mr Kpornu, however, managed to apprehend the woman later in the day and sent her to the police station where, according to C/lnsp. Amegashie, the suspect was cautioned and granted bail immediately.
C/Insp. Amegashie told this reporter in an interview that the suspect also had a genuine case, hence the caution and subsequent bail while investigation continued.
According to him, the victim at the time of the incident was preventing the suspect from carrying her cooked beans meant for hawking, adding that it was during the struggle that the hot beans in a plastic bucket fell off Madam Avevor's head and caused the harm.
In an interview with this reporter, the newly transferred District Commander, ASP Quaicoo, confirmed the incident and added that immediately he saw the victims with the burns all over their bodies, he ordered that the suspect be arraigned the following day.
Thus, on September 11, the suspect was put before a Tema Circuit Court where she pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against her. However, the court remanded her in police custody to reappear on September 26.
