Nineteen communities in the Agona East District of the Central Region would soon be connected to the national electricity grid, under the Self-Help Rural Electrification project. Mr Dennis Armah-Frimpong, District Chief Executive (DCE) announced this at the first ordinary session of the District Assembly at Agona Nsaba. He said electricity poles with fittings had been erected and expressed the hope that the people in the beneficiary communities would get electricity supply for the first time in their lives before the end of the year, with the support of the District Assembly. The DCE said the Assembly would construct and renovate 15 primary schools and seven school blocks with offices and other facilities. Mr Armah-Frimpong said the Assembly would spend GH¢10,000 on the projects to ensure quality teaching and learning. The DCE noted that in spite of the huge sums of money that the Assembly was investing in education at the basic level, “all was not well, judging from the result of the examination”. Mr Armah-Frimpong said the Assembly had budgeted GH¢190.000 to build more teachers quarters to enable the assembly to retain the teachers working in the District. The DCE made a passionate appeal to the Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) through the District Director of Education to post teachers to schools in the area, which is currently inadequate, due to the poor accommodation available. He mentioned some of the towns that would get the teachers' quarters as Asarekwaa, Asuso, Namawura, Aboano and Amamful. Mr Armah-Frimpong said majority of the feeder roads in the Agona East District would be rehabilitated before the end of the year, adding that, two kilometres of road at Agona Nsaba had been awarded on contract for tarring. He pointed out that the rehabilitation of these roads would help the farmers to bring their produce to the marketing centres and also to avoid loses. The DCE said the Assembly was in consultation with the MP for the area to purchase a grader to ensure routine maintenance of roads in the District. Nana Kwaw Ponsie, Presiding Member of the Assembly urged the people of the District to endeavour to honour their tax obligations, to enable the Assembly to undertake more development projects. He said the Assembly was facing challenges in the area of revenue generation, adding that, measures had been taken to identify more sources of revenue to improve the financial position of the Assembly.Source: GNA
