The founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President Rawlings has thanked officers and men of the 3rd Battalion of Infantry based at Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo region for their vigilance and steadfastness during the December Presidential and Parliamentary elections. The former President was particularly thankful for the manner the Battalion handled the January 2 election at Tain which culminated in “the true wishes of the people’ being exhibited. President Rawlings who inspected a guard in his honour and met the 3BN as part of his thank you tour of the region said, “By their actions they have restored dignity to the uniform” and urged them to continue to defend the state and the constitution. In appreciation of their efforts the former President donated six rams, a quantity of rice and some drinks to be used in organising a get-together for the children of officers and men of the Battalion and the Sunyani police. The former had a hectic time departing the 3BN barracks as he was mobbed the officers and men each of whom wanted an individual hug or handshake. He was compelled to promise a return visit before departing. The Commanding Officer of 3BN Lt Col Amoah thanked the former President for his support and co-operation during the Tain election and also for his visit to the unit. He pledged the Battalion’s resolve to work tirelessly to protect the sanctity of the country’s constitution at the peril of their lives. President Rawlings as part of his tour visited Tain over a two-day period to thank the chiefs and people for their vigilance and support to the NDC during the January 2 special Presidential election held in the constituency. The visit took the former President to Banda Ahenkro, Menji, Seikwa, Nsawkaw, Yabroso, Badu and it surrounding areas. Activities in all communities visited came to a standstill as all gathered to welcome Flt Lt Rawlings. At Banda Ahenkro the chief in his welcome address appealed to government to address the problems caused by Fulani herdsmen whose grazing cattle always destroy their crops. The Chief wondered why his people had to purchase food from Sunyani and Kumasi instead of they supplying food to those cities. At Badu, which was the last stop of the former President’s tour, he assured the people that the NDC government would use state resources judiciously for the good of all Ghanaians including the people of Tain. President Rawlings was accompanied on the tour by the Regional Minister Nyamekye Marfo, Deputy Regional Minister Eric Opoku, the Regional Chairman of the NDC Lawyer Owusu Agyeman, Hon Ahmed Ibrahim, MP for Tain, Madam Ayesha, Regional Vice-Chairman, Hon Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, MP for Kpone Katamanso, Kofi Adams, Deputy National Youth Organiser of the NDC and other regional and constituency executives.
