The Minority in Parliament has charged the Energy Minister, John Peter Amewu to disclose the full debt status of the power sector.
This comes after Mr Amewu at a press conference on Tuesday claimed debt owed Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) under the John Mahama administration summed up to ¢2.63 billion.
According to him, government had paid ¢2 billion annually to cover its bills with the ECG, therefore, covering all the debt in full leaving a credit of ¢500,000.
However, Ranking Member on Parliament's Mines and Energy Committee said the claims made by the sector minister are untrue.
Adams Mutawakilu indicated debt accumulated from 1992 to 2015 was $2.4 billion but before former President John Mahama left office and with the introduction of ESLA, it dropped to $2.2 billion.
So there is no way, the Akufo-Addo government can cover the debt owed ECG in three years by paying ¢2 billion each year.
“We call on the Minister as a matter of urgency, let the people know how much energy sector debt is left.
"Because the debt is made up of government owing ECG, suppliers, banks, IPPs and others,” he told Joy News’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo.
According to the Damango MP, ECG owes Ghana National Gas Company over $800 million, hence, government has only settled the debt of just one aspect and it is claiming the glory of covering all the debt owed by ECG.
“You cannot measure your performance by just picking one item, analysing it and claim that you are doing well," he said.
